Here, we present a simple compressor circuit which is able to compress the dynamic range of any analog audio signal. The specific circuit does not amplify quiet sounds but it just compresses loud sounds. The simple compressor-limiter is an analog circuit and can be used to process only analog audio.
It can be adjusted to change the way it affect sounds through two potentiometers. It uses soft compression for middle-loudness sounds and hard-compression for very loud sounds, thus acting as a limiter for very loud sounds. Basically, when acting as a limiter, the circuit uses high ratio compression and fast attack time.
The simple compressor — limiter, was actually designed to be used in FM radio broadcasting, where fast attack time is crucial because the modulation index of any FM transmitter must be kept below a certain limit, otherwise some interference may occur to neighbor radio channels.

One op- amp of the TL is used to measure the level of the input signal and the other op-amp is used as a variable-gain amplifier. For a junction field-effect transistor JFET under certain operating conditions, the resistance of the drain-source channel is a function of the gate-source voltage alone and the JFET will behave as an almost pure ohmic resistor. If the gate voltage is increased negatively for n-channel JFETs and positively for p-channelthe resistance will also increase.
When the drain current is reduced to a point where the FET is no longer conductive, the maximum resistance is reached. Thus the device functions as a voltage- controlled resistor. Figure 2 details typical operating characteristics of an n-channel JFET.

So, I'll explain how I interpret the circuit and see if anyone has any additions or corrections to what I have to say. The first tube looks to be doing two functions. The cathode is then AC coupled to the input of a diode detector formed by shorting the right hand triode grid and plate together. The detector decay will be tuned with the adjustable RC pair on the output. I believe that the first triode is running in a very nonlinear fashion just to drive the detector.
The second tube is more confusing. The input is clearly another cathode follower with an adjustable load. The adjustment seems to be used to set the bias point of the other triode which appears to be a simple common cathode amplifier. Now comes the confusing part. But maybe the 12AX7 is cleaner in the lower corner then I thought.
I just don't know. So overall, I guess the circuit kind of makes sense. But I would have to do some more rigorous circuit analysis to be certain. You should be able to power it up with just the left hand tube in the circuit to verify the detector operation.
Then power it up with just the right hand tube to verify the amplifier stage at least that's how I would approach it. The use of the 12AX7 is interesting here.
